Arabic opulence

November 22nd, 2009

Probably one of my favourite places to watch the sunset over the Arabian desert, Bab Al Shams is a luxurious hotel set amidst the dunes that has a great rooftop terrace perfect for this time of year. I’ve taken photographs there before, but I can always seem to find a new angle from which to photograph the Arabic lamps set against the setting sun.

A funny thing that happened at my last visit was that while I setup my tripod to capture the sunset, one of the waiters came to me to tell me that “professional photography is not allowed”. So I took the camera off the tripod, placed it flat on a wall and asked him if this was ok. He said yes and I snapped the shot below. Did it make it less “professional” without the tripod? Not sure about that…

UPDATE: Based on Jason’s comment below, I have cleaned up an area of the image where I didn’t notice a bit of sensor dust.

Wow! Love the colours and the definition. It really has a 3D feeling as if I was sitting there. Only one thing bothers me which is a dark L shape mark to the right of the clouds. See you are enjoying your new toy…!

Jason, thanks. I just spotted the dark shape as well and I will clean it up and repost the shot.

Great blog. I teach on a few Photography Holidays around the world and I’ll definitely be recommending this blog to my students who are always asking me about good photography sites!

Agilina, no it’s not Morocco. It’s a resort very close to Dubai in the UAE.
