City cranes

September 8th, 2012

Those of you who follow me on Instagram (the id there is momentaryawe), might have seen I was shooting these two buildings yesterday as I took my new D800 for a spin. I got the camera a few weeks ago, but I haven’t had much time to shoot with it (except for a couple of client shoots), so yesterday I wanted to go out and take some images so that I can finally post one on the blog. The D800 is a really great camera and the files it produces are huge (think over 7000 pixels on the long side!). I haven’t shot enough with it to do a more comprehensive review, but as I use it more, I will write about its features.

Now to the actual image… I’ve been looking at these two buildings for more than two years now as they’ve been close to my usual driving route and I’ve always wanted to stop and take some pictures with the buildings silhouetted against the sunset. I’m not 100% happy with it as I would have preferred to shoot from somewhere higher up, I still think this one is worth a post.

Don’t recognize these! Where are they?

I’ve had my D800 for about a month and really enjoy it. Its heavy, and with the 24-70 F2.8 the whole kit weighs close to 5 pounds. A tripod is a must, but so far I’m really digging it. Great shot, btw.

Kris, I agree with you on the heavy part, but I really like what they did with the battery grip as it’s very well balanced with the 24-70 lens.

Dubaiwalla, they are on the Umm Suqueim Road just before the Emirates Road flyover.

To be honest, I like the original more than processed one. I think the ideal is somewhere in between. Is your monitor calibrized right?

If you’re talking about the slightly purple hue, that was intentional (I used a curve to slightly change the colours). If you’re talking about the fact that it’s quite dark, that was also intentional as I was trying to get the cranes to be really obvious.

I was talking about the purple hue. I know that the impression largely depends on specific display and settings, and that can really be a problem when processing a photo.
