I am trying to organize a trip to China and I was planning on going to Shanghai for a few days and then take the newly built train to Lhasa, the capital of Tibet. The train is the highest in the world crossing the Tanggula Pass at just over 5000m. However, in order to go to Lhasa or any other Tibetan region you need a travel permit and according to a couple of travel agencies I spoke with in China, these permits have not been issued since the unrest early this year in Tibet. This is so typical of a communism regime. If you can’t control a situation than just hide it from the rest of the world. It really brings back memories from Romania during the communist years.
