It was yet another late night spent taking photographs around the beautiful fjords of the Westfjords region in Iceland and as I was driving down a steep mountain road down into the fjord I noticed the sun starting to come out from behind the clouds shining brightly alongside this church. I’m not much of a religious man, but this really felt like a photographic religious experience.
Being so late (around midnight) there was nobody around and at times like this you really appreciate nature and how small we all are on this planet. The way the sun was lighting up this church was just magical. As for the church, I’m afraid I couldn’t tell you anything about it as there were no signs outside and like I said, the place was deserted.
In terms of post-processing, you’ll notice that I haven’t done much to this shot. I just increased the red saturation to make the sunset a bit more punchy and also used a couple of curves to improve the contrast. I probably could have gone the HDR way with this one (I actually took a sequence of 9 bracketed shots), but I really felt the moment was so magical that it didn’t need that much processing work.
