I visited Martinique in 2003 and it was my first time in the Caribbean. The trip didn’t start very good since on my 3 day stop in Paris, Air France managed to loose my luggage. They got it back to me just in time for the flight from Paris to Fort-De-France, the capital of Martinique. In Martinique I stayed with Sego, a friend who I used to work with in Bahrain. Knowing someone that actually lived there made the whole trip a lot more fun and I visited the less travelled places. The island of Martinique is beautiful and it has everything from amazing beaches to mountains and volcanoes. Mt. Pelee is a famous volcano that in 1902 erupted on the island killing everyone in the town of Saint Pierre except for one prisoner in the local prison.
One thing you will always see in Martinique are the cruise ships that pull daily into the Fort-De-France port. I wouldn’t recommend doing one of these cruises since every single person on these ships seems to only stay in an area with hotels that look exactly the same as each other and that the locals call “disneyland”.
