Nazare Challenge 2016

While in Portugal in December last year, the first ever Nazaré Challenge big wave surfing competition got the green light as some big swell was approaching the coast. Since I’ve been trying to watch the surfers catch these huge waves for a few years now, we jumped in the car and headed for the beach first thing in the morning.

The waves were solid 20 footers and the surfers were doing their best to be towed in and catching these monsters. I’m not sure who was the surfer in this shot, but unfortunately, the take off was a little bit late so about 5 seconds after this photo was made, he got slammed by a wall of water.
