One of my favourite things during our Dubai to Romania road trip last year was discovering ancient sites that were a part of the famous Silk Route and throughout Turkey and Iran you will find many caravanserais (the ancient equivalent of roadside inns) where travelers and traders could rest for the night.
The most impressive caravanserai we came across on our route was Sultan Han, a large fortified structure built in 1229 in the province of Aksaray in Turkey. It’s not very close to famous tourist destinations which means we had the whole place to ourselves!
