If you’ve been following my blog for a long time, you’ll know I’m not big into reviewing gear. Most of the times, I’m not an early adopter and I tend to stick for quite a while with the gear that I like. I’m also not a “pixel peeper” – I think composition and the feel of your images are much more important than the exact amount of noise you get at ISO one and a half million. I would rather be out traveling and making photographs than spend hours looking at an image magnified 10 times and figuring out which red pixel is missing.
A couple of years ago I bought the XT-1 camera from Fuji with a couple of lenses, mostly as a lighter camera I could carry with me in situations where it would be too much to carry a heavier DSLR. I liked the camera, but a couple of things were really not working for me (the interface for changing the focus point being a big issue for me). So when Fuji Middle East gave me a call and asked if I would like to try the pre-production model of the XT-2 I was quite excited assuming that some of the changes implemented in the X-Pro2 were also coming to the XT-2. I was right!
I’ve been using the camera for about a month now and I’ve been shooting with it in Dubai as well as in Romania and Kazakhstan. My first impression was that it just fits a little bit better in my hand. The body is slightly thicker and the focus joystick from the X-Pro2 is finally here as well. The sensor is now 24.3MP which is just about the sweet spot – big enough to allow you to crop a bit, but not overly big so you start worrying about the backup space. The other really interesting change for me was the addition of a second memory card slot – I can now backup what I’m shooting, while I’m shooting and not worry too much about having one day traveling when I don’t have time to backup my work on the computer. Another good improvement on the XT-1 is the battery – although the same size as before, they have made some internal changes and while shooting I definitely noticed getting quite a few more shots out of one battery.
There’s plenty of reviews and photographs of all the new design features already online, so I’ll just show you some images instead, shot with XT-2.
