I’ve been thinking a lot over the last few days the road trip I did last summer from Dubai to Romania and back and I’m really missing those days of not quite knowing where I’ll be sleeping that night. Having a good 4×4 mounted with a roof-top tent really gives you a lot of flexibility as you can pretty much always find some out of the way spots to camp for the night.
This spot actually has a funny story attached to it. After spending the day visiting a fairly remote area in Western Iran and walking around the ruins at Takht-e Soleymān, I started heading South, looking for a camping spot for the evening. I took a couple of side roads into the mountains and found this gorgeous place overlooking the valley where I opened the tent for the evening. As I was sorting out everything in the tent I started noticing really black clouds on the horizon quickly closing in. I wasn’t worried about rain at all as the tent was already tested in some really heavy rains in Europe, but what really got me worried was the lighting that got closer and closer. Since I was pretty much on the highest point there, I decided to quickly pack up the tent and not risk having it on fire! I waited out the rain for about an hour and then set the tent again into a more protected area, being happy that the lighting didn’t come during the night.
